A few bent strips of metal or a bead of sealant at the chimney base does more protective work than any single shingle. In a climate that throws hail, wind driven snow, ice dams, and forty degree temperature swings at your roof in the same season, cutting corners on flashing means cutting corners on the whole house.

A new roof is only as watertight as its weakest seam. That means the chimney, the valleys, the skylights, and the eaves deserve the same careful attention as the broad field of shingles above them. Valley flashing in particular takes the heaviest runoff load every time it rains or snows, and a pinhole gap there will find the ceiling below it within a season or two.
